Early review of WinMo IE6 includes review of Flash Lite 3.1
WMexperts recently published a review of the forthcoming IE6 for Windows Mobile 6.1 which includes Flash Lite 3.1 as a browser extension. The review mentions the positive and negative aspects of using Flash Lite for experiencing the kind of Flash content typically found on the “desktop PC” web through a non desktop pc device.
While the reviewer appreciates being able to watch youtube from the web browser via Flash Lite, the WMexperts review really pans this browser and also pans the Flash Lite experience in the browser. The reviewer tested IE6 on a Treo Pro phone which is probably not the highest performing winmo device on the market. The reviewer complained about slow browser performance and that some web based flash content did not work at all and instead displayed a compatibility error message. (This is probably what Apple wants to avoid…)
The most important point of this is that if you are a Flash developer mostly focused on desktop PC web content but also want to make sure your site or application works on a windows mobile 6.1 device (or any web browsing device for that matter), then you may need to rethink your application. Scaling of content to smaller screens, version compatibility, feature set compatibility, 100 fps advertisements, etc could all quickly become an issue as more and more of these devices enter the market.
