AT&T may focus on Symbian OS - benefits Flash Lite and WRT in US
According to a C-NET article, AT&T may focus on just one or two mobile operating systems in the future. During a talk a the Symbian Parter Event, Roger Smith, director of next-generation services at AT&T, stated that “We want to standardize our platforms on a platform like Symbian that is mature and effective.”
As it relates to Flash Lite, Symbian s60 is the most mature and most effective implementation of Flash Lite. Its currently the only platform with native, easy to use solutions for packaging and device service api integration. s60 also supports the WRT platform which is maturing quickly and offers interesting potential for mobile applications.
However AT&T, which is the only network offering s60 in the US at this time, only distributes one or two s60 phones at a time. Consequently, there are few phones supporting the s60 implementation of Flash Lite in the US. If AT&T were to emphasize Symbian s60 devices for its lower end smart phone demographic, this could significantly increase the number of s60 Flash Lite capable phones in the NA market.
